Canadian company lends hand to South Korean natural gas project

Montreal-based Xebec Adsorption has been tapped to build a biogas plant for a project being developed by the Sudokwon Landfill Corporation in Seoul

Montreal-based Xebec Adsorption Inc. has been tapped to build a biogas plant for a project being developed by the Sudokwon Landfill Corporation in Seoul, Korea.

The biogas upgrading plant will purify biogas produced from food waste to produce compressed natural gas (C.N.G.). The renewable gas will be used to fuel the city’s fleet of C.N.G. buses through an existing refueling station at the Sudokwon landfill site.

The plant is expected to be commissioned in the latter half of 2010, while other details about the contract are still under wraps.

The Sudokwon project is the first of its kind in the country to produce renewable fuel from food waste, according to Andrew Hall, Xebec vice president for Asia-Pacific.

"The biogas market in South Korea is poised for rapid growth, with the Korean government providing significant support for the construction of anaerobic digesters to process both food waste and agricultural waste such as manure,” noted Mr. Hall.
