After R.G.G.I. exit: New Jersey governor reduces Renewable Portfolio Standard

Intro Text:
Two weeks after pulling out from a 10-state regional greenhouse gas reduction program, New Jersey Governor Chris Christie now plans to cut back the state’s target on the amount of electricity it has to derive from renewable energy sources by 2021. The governor recommended reduction of the state’s Renewable Portfolio Standard to 22.5 percent, saying the 30 percent goal set by his Democratic predecessor, Jon Corzine, was not achievable.

Goldman Earnings Sink After Buffett Dividend

goldman sachsGoldman Sachs’ earnings fell 53 percent in the fourth quarter due to sharp declines in its bond trading and investment banking businesses.

Goldman Sachs Group Inc. earned .23 billion after paying preferred dividends in the last three months of the year, down from .79 billion in the same period year earlier. On a per-share basis, the earnings came out to .79 per share versus .20 per share.

Analysts surveyed by FactSet expected the bank to earn .76 per share. Revenue fell 10 percent to .64 billion. Goldman fell 2.4 percent to 0.48, leading other financial stocks lower.

The bank’s chief financial officer, David Viniar, attributed the poor performance to “heightened uncertainty surrounding the global economic outlook.” In a conference call with analysts to discuss earnings, Viniar said the uncertainty led to a steady decline in investment banking activity during the year.

Lennar Down After Q1 Report: Watch the Price Action

I’m sure shareholders of homebuilder Lennar (LEN) are in a flummoxed mood. The company posted what appeared to be a strong earnings report, yet its stock is experiencing some pressure. At the time of this writing, it was down 3.3% to .09 on robust volume.

According to the Associated Press, the company made 14 cents per share during the fiscal first quarter — when the projection called for a loss of 5 cents per share. Great performance, right? And furthermore, this time last year at there was a Q1 loss of 4 cents per share. I mean, that has to be worth a bid, correct?

Australia weighs nuclear push after Japan crisis

Intro Text:
CANBERRA, March 22 (Reuters) – Japan’s nuclear crisis threatens to derail a political push by Australia’s government to overturn a ban on selling uranium to India, as well as a drive to use nuclear power domestically to counter climate change. Discover Financial Services Trading Higher After Q1 Release

When it comes to credit-card businesses, I’m partial to Visa, Inc. (V). Even so, I have to give my respect today to Discover Financial Services (DFS). At the time of this writing, the stock was up 4.5% to .26. Volume was strong. Furthermore, a new 52-week high of .46 was recorded earlier in the day (by the time this is published, it’s possible the high quote will be different).

The stock has been a good holding over the last twelve months. The 52-week low is .11, and the one-year chart shows strength. This name is heading for a double. Is it too late to buy?

Buyers Flee Nike After Earnings

Nike, Inc. (NKE) is doing horribly this afternoon. As I write this, a quote of .51 is on my screen. That represents a drop of over 9% for the shares. Volume is huge. Hopefully many of you out there didn’t do an earnings trade on this one.

How bad were the fiscal Q3 numbers? According to MarketWatch, net income of .08 per share was four pennies below the overall call by Wall Street. In addition, the potential for a weakening gross margin is said to have played a part in the sell-off.

National Semiconductor: Buy After Q3 Report?

Filed under:

National Semiconductor (NSM)National Semiconductor (NSM) issued its fiscal third-quarter numbers Thursday after the bell. The stock was behaving in a highly unexciting way in reaction to the data at the time I was writing this. At an extended-hours quote of .10, it was off by a mere 0.4%.

It was a different story heading into the report, however; the shares lost 2.1% of their value, closing at .16. Volume was strong. I should also note that in the early stages of the extended-hours session, the stock was more active, as indicated by this item over at Barron’s.

Urban Outfitters Experiences Big Drop After Q4 Report

You didn’t want to be a short-term shareholder in Urban Outfitters (URBN) during Monday’s after-hours session. At the time I was writing this, I saw a quote of .10. That’s a 10% drop. And that isn’t good.

A fourth-quarter earnings report caused the volatility. According to TheFly, net income came in seven pennies less than expected. Also, gross margin experienced a decline.
