General Electric Company made its latest move into the solar market by buying a minority stake in California-based solar thermal company ESolar to develop power plants that combine solar thermal energy and natural gas. The investment gives G.E. an exclusive license to combine ESolar’s tower-based solar thermal technology into its new 510-megawatt natural gas-powered power plant, the FlexEfficiency 50, which G.E. unveiled in May.

General Electric Company has launched its new onshore wind turbine targeted at the low wind speed market and already received more than 630 megawatts worth of orders from projects in the United States and Brazil.The 1.6-100 combines parts from G.E.’s 1.5-MW turbine with its 2.5-MW turbine. It is designed to have blades that extend 100 meters— a height of 33 stories — increasing the area it can sweep and capture wind by 47 percent compared with previous models.

American think tank Pike Research forecasts that by 2015, more than 1.3 million plug-in electric vehicles will be used by various government and corporate sectors worldwide. The group’s senior analyst David Hurst said manufacturers will turn to fleet markets in the early years of sales, increasing the plug-in electric market’s performance. As a result, passenger cars will be the leading segment representing more than 80 percent of total sales in 2015.

Coloumb Technologies developed a reservation system on its ChargePoint network to ensure electric vehicle owners of an available charging station in route to their destination. Electric vehicle drivers would sign in on the company’s ChargePoint Network website and search for reservable stations. Drivers can also have unlimited charging station access privileges during their reserved charging session time by using the company’s ChargePass card.

General Electric Company reported a 6 percent increase in its revenues this quarter from its overall operations compared last year but saw its wind turbine orders, its primary renewable energy product, tumble because of lower turbine prices.The New York-based conglomerate had .4 billion in revenues in the first three months of this year and had first quarter operating earnings of .6 billion, up 58 percent compared with the same period last year, according to a press release from G.E.

Based on growing demand for and use trends in electric motorcycles and scooters, two-wheel electric vehicles could be one of the world’s most widely used vehicles years from now. At present there are 17 million electric motorcycles and scooters on the road according to market analyst Pike Research. But electric versions of the two vehicle categories could number 138 million by 2017 globally, with an annual growth rate of 9 percent.

Logistics giant DHL will deploy an all-green commercial delivery fleet in Manhattan composed of 80 low-emission, alternative fuel vehicles by September this year. Of the 80 vehicles, 50 will be hybrid trucks while 30 will be electric vans. Hybrid and electric vehicle developer Azure Dynamics is manufacturing the vehicles, with Ford Motor Company providing the chassis. The hybrid trucks will feature Azure’s hybrid powertrain into the Ford E450.

The Norwegian postal service ordered 20 units of the Ford Transit Connect Electric van in its continuing efforts to green its operations. The purchase will make Norway Post the first European buyer of the zero-emission electric van. The contract includes an option for more orders in the future. The Ford electric van is an updated electric version of the long-wheelbase Transit Connect light commercial vehicle. |
