Study reveals grass yields more ethanol and less emissions than corn
| Intro Text: |
Researchers from University of Illinois conducted a study and found that grass that grows all year round will yield more ethanol output and lesser greenhouse gases emissions. The least productive farmlands in many parts of the United States are planted with corn used for ethanol production. Grasses like miscanthus, a hybrid grass used in Western Europe and switchgrass, which is native in the United States.

LONDON, June 8 (Reuters) – China’s carbon dioxide emissions rose 10.4 percent in 2010 compared with the previous year, as global emissions rose at their fastest rate for more than four decades, data released by BP on Wednesday showed. “All forms of energy grew strongly (last year), with growth in fossil fuels suggesting that global carbon dioxide emissions from energy use grew at the fastest rate since 1969,” energy major BP’s annual Statistical Review of World Energy said.

New Zealand said population growth, land use change and drought caused the rise in the country’s greenhouse gas emissions in an official report to the United Nations. Following the country’s unique emission patterns, the agriculture sector was still the top industrial emitter in New Zealand as cited in its fifth official communication to the United Nations published on the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change’s Web site this week.
BEIJING, April 29 (Reuters) – China, the world’s biggest emitter of greenhouse gases, could peak in emissions by 2030 or earlier, says a study from U.S. researchers who foresee Chinese demand for appliances, buildings and much industry reaching “saturation” around then. The study by energy and emissions experts at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in California adds to a growing body of studies that say China could reach its maximum output of carbon dioxide (CO2) within two decades.
Castle Peak Power Company Limited has completed retrofits on four of the generating units at the Castle Peak Power Station to minimize sulphur dioxide and nitrogen oxide emissions. As part of Capco’s emissions reduction project, four large coal generators, each producing 677 megawatts at the Castle Peak Power Station “B”, were retrofitted with emissions control equipment.
The German government has adopted the amendments to the Greenhouse Gas Emissions Trading Act, charging airlines and other emission-intensive industries for emission permits starting 2012 and 2013, respectively. The amendments were done to align Germany’s policies with those of the European Union’s emission trading system. Its adoption transposes the bloc’s common trading scheme into a German law.
Carbon dioxide emissions from United States power plants climbed 5.56 percent in 2010 over the previous year, the biggest annual increase since the Environmental Protection Agency began tracking emissions in 1995. Former E.P.A. enforcement lawyers group Environmental Integrity Project showed in a report based in the E.P.A.’s “Clean Air Markets” Web site that electricity generators spewed 2.423 billion tons of carbon dioxide in 2010, compared with 2.295 billion tons in 2009.
Greenhouse gas emissions dropped to 1.94 million metric tons
