Sara Lee Reports Second-Quarter Data

Sara Lee Corp. (SLE) isn’t far from its 52-week high of .40. At the time of this writing, the quote was valued at .30. The shares have traded in a narrow range over the last twelve months; the 52-week low is .17.

The stock is experiencing selling pressure (it’s currently down 1%) following the company’s fiscal Q4 report. According to this article, adjusted profit of 19 cents per share beat the consensus by three pennies. Furthermore, the actual press release states that cash from operations came in at 2 million over the past four quarters; in the comparable period, the business generated 0 million from operations.

Second-Quarter GDP Suggests Recovery Is Losing Steam

Department of CommerceGross domestic product growth slowed to a 2.4% pace, the slowest in nearly a year, the Commerce Department announced Friday. The reading of this measure of economic activity is too weak to push down unemployment. The quarter saw consumers spend less and retailers limit stock, this combined with the fact that the trade deficit had a larger impact on the economy and we have the formula for some rather unpleasant economic news.

Combine this report with the one indicating that the recession was worse than originally thought and our rosy picture of the economy takes a noticeably gray tint.

AT&T Second-Quarter Earnings Increase, Boosts Forecast

Thursday morning AT&T (T) announced that second-quarter diluted earnings totaled 68 cents per share. The results were 14 cents better than the same quarter a year ago. Taking a one-time gain of seven cents out of the equation (stemming from a stock transaction), AT&T still managed to top the consensus estimate of 57 cents per share.

The company also reported that it topped 90 million connections for the first time during the quarter, driven by a record 3.2 million iPhone accounts activated (a company record). The activations weren’t solely driven by the iPhone, as 1.6 million other wireless connections were added (a second-quarter record). All in all, it was a solid quarter for AT&T.

Mattel’s Second-Quarter Income Doubles

Toy titan Mattel (MAT) announced Friday morning that its second-quarter income more than doubled, driven by Barbies and “Toy Story 3″ toys. MAT logged income of 14 cents per share during the quarter, far better than the six cents per share earned in the same quarter a year ago.

Unfortunately, while the earnings were far better than a year ago, the toymaker missed the Street’s estimate by a penny. Revenue checked in at .02 billion, 13% better than last year and matching expectations.
